Los ensayos, titulados colectivamente “Impresiones de América (por un español muy fresco)” aparecieron en la revista The Hour el 10 de julio, el 21 de agosto y el 23 de octubre de 1880. El ensayista cubano resume a veces de forma bastante picante su reacción inicial a los Estados Unidos. Al hacerlo, se centra por primera vez en las mujeres norteamericanas, estableciendo una perspectiva crítica y metafórica que prevalecerá a lo largo de las Escenas norteamericanas que escribió para diferentes periódicos latinoamericanos durante sus quince años en Nueva York. Sostengo que aborda sus temas como símbolos de un periodo histórico concreto más que como seres humanos. Son emblemas de esa Gilded Age que llegó a detestar.
